Ad-block for Google Chrome is out

Postby Admin on 16 September 2008

Install adblock-like plugin for Google Chrome - very easy install. This javascrpts plugin lets you get rid of on page ads and pop-ups.

The best thing is how easy it is to install this plugin. Just drag a link in your bookmarks folder: (CTRL+B) to open your bookmarks toolbar. Go to google-chrome.com for the link http://google-chrome.com/first-plugin-s ... e-browser/

Code: Select all
javascript:(function(){function R(w){try{var d=w.document,j,i,t,T,N,b,r=1,C;for(j=0;t=["object","embed","applet","iframe"][j];++j){T=d.getElementsByTagName(t);for(i=T.length-1;(i+1)&&(N=T[i]);--i)if(j!=3||!R((C=N.contentWindow)?C:N.contentDocument.defaultView)){b=d.createElement("div");b.style.width=N.width; b.style.height=N.height;b.innerHTML="<del>"+(j==3?"third-party "+t:t)+"</del>";N.parentNode.replaceChild(b,N);}}}catch(E){r=0}return r}R(self);var i,x;for(i=0;x=frames[i];++i)R(x)})()

Pretty easy right! There are more plugins available like stumble it for bookmarking on Stumbleupon. There is also a video download plugin. All simple javascript that you drag and install. I am sure things will be more elegant soon but this is so easy. :)

Unfortunately, i can't even get that much functionality. I've tried this several times and in several ways, but just manage to create more bookmarks.

Hmm, how did you make your bookmark? Go here http://google-chrome.com/first-plugin-s ... e-browser/ and drag the link at adblock+ plugin" to your bookmark toolbar - then click on it. Let me know if you get it going.

I did it too... it provides some functionality but it's really not much... is dragging bookmarks going to be the only way to add plugins? And will you have to click them for every website you visit to remove the ads?
I'm still primarily using firefox and I must admit that I love the smooth, lightweight interface that chrome provides but I'm not going to switch entirely if there wont' be any add-on with the same funtioncality as adblock plus:(

Seems like using the javascript trick is the only way for now. Once they release their plugin API, the games should change.

For those reading this post and wondering where to get the Stumble It "Plugin", here are the steps you need to follow:

1. If your bookmarks bar isn't already showing, hit ctrl+B
2. Right-click your bookmarks toolbar and chose "Add Page"
3. In "Name" field, type "Stumble It"
4. In URL field copy and paste the following javascript code:
Code: Select all
javascript:document.location.href='http://www.stumbleupon.com/submit?url='+document.URL+'&title='+document.title.replace(/%20/g,'+');

...and there you have it!

I have the same problem of both the AdBlocker and the Linkify plugins need to be clicked on for every page I visit. They won't automatically run.

This addon works fine in Chrome, albeit still under development: http://www.adsweep.org
