Greasmonkey for Chrome is Greasemetal!

Postby Admin on 11 September 2008

Greasemonkey is the best complete extension for Mozzila Firefox. With its userscripts that change webpages in realtime, these scripts can really customize the user experience of a browser. So, us power users of Firefox will need something like Greasemonkey for the Chrome browser.

Here comes Greasemetal! Its kind of like Greasemonkey in that you can use userscripts coded for greasmonkey on Google Chrome with Greasemetal as a "plugin". Only thing is Greasemetal doesn’t have a nice UI to manage the scripts just yet. I am sure it is coming though...

How to Install Greasemetal on Google Chrome

1. Download Greasemetal and execute the installer.
2. Once installed, start Greasemetal from start menu, Important: When you start Greasemetal, Chrome should not be running.
3. Add Userscripts to the userjs directory under your My Documents Folder ( or Documents folder on Windows Visa).

Known problems with greasemetal beta:

1. UI for Userscript management
2, No support for GM_* functions

I am really surprised they even have their own version of Greasemonkey! Good to know though, I use a lot of these scripts in FF.

There is a newer version out (v 0.2)
After the initial release a number of users requested support for GM_* functions, to improve compatibily with many existing userscripts written for Greasemonkey. So in version 0.2, we have implemented following functions:

* GM_log
* GM_addStyle
* GM_openInTab
* unsafewindow

After installing Greasemetal, do I save the scripts as a .txt file? I used Greasemonkey for FF for the 1st time today, but what about in Chrome? How do you download scripts? and How do you know if they are working?
